Enna
“Enna” from the Etruscan “mount”. Or “Ennaien”, word of Greek derivation that means “living within”. Or “Ennaon”, too, “the temple”. Or perhaps “En-naan”, Punic expression indicating a “place of delights”, a “source of amities”, an image which isn’t only poetical, but also true, motivated by the period oh the big transhumances, when the herds moved with the shepherds from the plains to the pastures on the mountains. Last but not least, we could take into account the name of Ennio, the Syracusan who repopuled the city after it was razwd to the ground by the Siculians, in  the 5th century B.C. Among the other names there also Henna, Ennair,Hennaion, Castrum Henna, Kasr Jani, Kasr Henna, Kasr Janna, Qasr Jannih, Castrogiovanni and, finally, Enna again from 1926.
Various were the names that Enna received from many populatins that inhabited it, although conquering the city wasn’t easy at all. Thanks to its position in the middle of  Sicily Callimaco defined it Umbilicus Siciliae , while Tito Livio gave the city the name Urbs inexpugnabilis, due to is strategic position inland..
The first settlements were created by the Sicani, a native Sicilian population who was then forced to abandon the eastern side of the island because of the invasion of the Siculians.
The Siculians made Enna one of the main sacred centres of the cult of Cereres, the ctonian Harvest Goddess, who in honour they built a sacre fence and a sanctuary on the eastern slope of the mount. Traces, mostly imaginabile, are the Cerere’s Rock, at the foot of the Lombard Castle.
The legend of Cerere within the most ancient handed down by Enna inhabitants says that early settlements defended the town and fought against other people comimg up. The primitive fortifications concerned exclusively Enna sanctuary with is grotta and fountains.
The fortress was built only when consul Marcello destroyed Enna inhabitants and slave named Ennio served as governor for a short period. The ruins, after interesting archaeological excavations, are witness evidence of previous ancient fortress.
